We believe first and foremost Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a ‘MARTIAL’ Art. As such, we ensure that we focus on teaching our students how to successfully defend themselves with their Jiu-Jitsu skills. We present a cutting edge, up to date approach to self-preservation training.
At Team Monkey-Jits our primary focus is not on competitive style Jits. This doesn’t mean that we do not have students who compete, because we do – but at the heart of our coaching philosophy is applied Jiu-Jitsu for self-preservation. We believe it is absolutely imperative that all our students know how to effectively defend themselves using the Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. While we love competitive style Jits, we know from first hand experience, that competition and the street are two very different animals.
Secondly, we believe that in order to honor Jiu-Jitsu as the Gentle Art – training should be grounded in fun, personal challenge and play. We offer our students a Jiu-Jitsu experience that will help them achieve inner success and honor their creative spirit. In this way, our students are able to take the lessons that they learn on the mat, to positively affect their life off it. Subsequently our students are able to embody the Jiu-Jitsu Lifestyle: which is to seek Flow no matter the obstacle!
Monkey-Jits is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expression headed by 4th degree Rigan Machado black belt Rodney King. Rodney is most well known for developing the Crazy Monkey Defense striking based program that is now taught all over the world. Several years ago trainers of Crazy Monkey Defense asked Rodney if he would consider putting together a program for Jiu-Jitsu, and the Monkey-Jits Team was born.
Rodney was South Africa’s first BJJ black Belt. Back in those days (circa 1996) Jiu-Jitsu was still gaining popularity, and outside of himself there was only one other person teaching BJJ in South Africa. Rodney began his Jiu-Jitsu journey not for competition but for self-preservation. As such, even today, Rodney ensures that the Jiu-Jitsu he and his trainers around the world teach focus first and foremost on the application of Jiu-Jitsu to self-protection.
